SUMMARY:The return of looted artefacts since 1945: post-fascist and post-colonial restitution in comparative perspective
DESCRIPTION:Conferenza internazionale della Fondazione Max Weber\, organizzata dall’Istituto Storico Germanico di Roma\, sul tema del confronto tra la restituzione dei beni culturali ebraici e di quelli coloniali a partire dal 1945. Lungi dal proporre semplicistici paragoni\, attraverso l’analisi della politicizzazione della cultura materiale a partire dalla fine della Seconda Guerra Mondiale il convegno esamina l’evoluzione di tematiche quali il ruolo del patrimonio culturale nella (ri)costruzione delle comunità nazionali e collettive\, il persistere dell’anti-semitismo e del razzismo e la concezione di patrimonio culturale come componente indispensabile della giustizia di transizione in prospettiva globale. \nWhile the glaring differences between Holocaust-era and colonial-era persecutions and expropriation instances are indisputable\, inquiring into the similarities in post-fascist and post-colonial restitution practices and discourses appears crucial to better understand not only the political relevance of heritage and its role in memory- and nation-building\, but also the persistence of anti-Jewish and racist stereotypes in the post-1945 world order and the recurrence of restitution motives in present-day nationalist propaganda.
