DESCRIPTION:Program of the International Historical-Anthropological Conference\n“On categories and boundaries:  Intersections in the history and ethnography of Europe’s Sinti and Roma (19th-21st centuries)” \nFree University of Bolzano\nPiazza del Università 1\nRoom E 2.21\n6 – 7 June 2017 \nThis conference will offer a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of the relationship between Roma and Sinti and nation-states in European borderlands from 19th to 21th century. How has the territorial definition of national states created structures which require specific rules targeting populations involved in trans-border mobility and cross border practices? Based on a cross disciplinary perspective embracing anthropological and historical approaches\, this conference will analyse the making of categories and their effect on Romani people. Through an analysis of national case studies and through bottom-up approaches\, the conference will focus on the modern definitions of citizenship and nationality and their effect on mobility control and cross-border circulation as a key aspect of continuities and transformation of anti-Gypsy policies in Europe and beyond. Furthermore\, the conference aims to highlight the way Roma and Sinti families in particular have handled these public policies and how they have transmitted or redefined modes of resistance\, conflict\, or invisibility in the face of power exercised by state institutions.\nFind Flyer and Program attached. \nLa conferenza intende offrire un’analisi comparativa e interdisciplinare sulla relazione fra Sinti\, Rom e stati nazione in Europa fra XIX e XXI secolo\, con particolare attenzione alle regioni di confine. Incrociando prospettive storiche e antropologiche\, la conferenza vuole analizzare le diverse costruzioni categoriali a cui Sinti e Rom sono stati sottoposti nei diversi contesti politico-sociali: la scelta è di partire dall’analisi di situazioni concrete per giungere a illustrare i singoli casi nazionali. In che modo la nascita degli stati nazione ha implicato la creazione di un regime di controllo dei confini rivolto\, in particolare\, a quei gruppi che praticavano una mobilità transfrontaliera? A partire dal XIX secolo\, nazionalità e cittadinanza diventano aspetti chiave delle politiche di controllo sulla circolazione transfrontaliera dei Sinti e dei Rom\, a cui spesso si somma una crescente attenzione per la loro mobilità interna: mettere in relazione questi due aspetti delle politiche anti-zingare permette di evidenziarne continuità e trasformazioni secondo i diversi periodi storici. Altrettanto importante è dare rilievo al modo in cui le reti familiari Sinte e Rom abbiano fatto fronte alle politiche anti-zingare\, a come tramandino o ridefiniscano modalità di resistenza\, conflitto o invisibilità rispetto al potere esercitato dalle istituzioni dello stato.\nProgramma e Flyer in allegato.
