SUMMARY:Toby Simpson\, “How Jewish refugees founded and sustained The Wiener Holocaust Library\, 1934-2011”\, Wolfson College\, Cambridge
DESCRIPTION:Martedì 3 giugno\, ore 18:30 (5.30 pm GMT) Seminario della Humanities Society del Wolfson College\, Università di Cambridge\nDr Toby Simpson (Director\, Wiener Library\, London)\, ‘How Jewish refugees founded and sustained The Wiener Holocaust Library\, 1934-2011’\nChair: Bianca Gaudenzi (Libera Università di Bolzano; Wolfson College\, University of Cambridge) \nPer partecipare su zoom si prega di registrarsi al seguente link: https://wolfson-cam-ac-uk.zoom.us/meeting/register/MSl_ziBrS8CbM5X0H6zX7g#/registration \nAbstract: The Wiener Holocaust Library is one of the world’s most important independent archives. Situated on Russell Square\, London\, since 2011\, its extensive collections include survivor testimonies\, photographs\, personal and official documents\, pamphlets and rare books. This presentation will explore the motivations\, successes and setbacks of the extraordinary people who sustained what Dr Alfred Wiener\, the Library’s founder\, described as an ‘annually recurring miracle’. The Wiener collections have proven to be vital at key moments during and especially after the Holocaust\, including the Nuremberg\, Eichmann and David Irving trials.

SUMMARY:Selena Daly (UCL)\, "Salute! Italian immigrants’ experiences of birth\, death and ill health in post-war Britain"
DESCRIPTION:Martedì 26 novembre\, ore 18:30 (5.30 pm GMT) Seminario della Humanities Society del Wolfson College\, Università di Cambridge\nDr Selena Daly (University College London)\, ‘Salute! Italian immigrants’ experiences of birth\, death and ill health in post-war Britain’\nChair: Bianca Gaudenzi (Libera Università di Bolzano; Wolfson College\, Cambridge; Istituto Storico Germanico di Roma) \nPer partecipare su zoom si prega di registrarsi al seguente link: https://wolfson-cam-ac-uk.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMrde2rrjotEtIJzmXC8JSy0mjY7D6Q4AG-#/registration \nAbstract: Around the world\, the immigrant body has long been deemed a potential site of disease that may taint the native population and\, even today\, medical exams are a standard requirement to obtain immigration visas and work permits. However\, historically\, immigrants’ experiences of ill-health and healthcare in their new homes are a much less-well documented aspect of the migratory trajectory. This talk will use Italian immigrants in Great Britain since 1945 as a case study through which to examine the interaction of immigration and healthcare provision. I will adopt a life-stages approach\, examining key moments at which Italian immigrants engaged with healthcare settings – namely when giving birth\, during periods of ill-health\, and in old age. Of particular interest will be an exploration of factors impacting upon access to NHS care (e.g. gender\, age\, linguistic competence) and the role of community-specific services\, e.g. the Italian Hospital\, active in London until 1990\, and the Villa Scalabrini Italian nursing home in Hertfordshire\, which opened in the 1980s. Using a mixture of archival documents\, community newspapers and oral history interviews\, this research seeks to build a nuanced portrait of how Italians in England have experienced and confronted life\, death and illness over the last 80 years.

SUMMARY:Maurizio Isabella (QMUL)\, "The Age of Revolutions in Southern Europe"\, in conversation with Sujit Sivasundaram and Renaud Morieux
DESCRIPTION:Martedì 27 febbraio\, ore 18:30 (5.30 pm GMT) Seminario della Humanities Society del Wolfson College\, Università di Cambridge\nProfessor Maurizio Isabella (Queen Mary\, University of London)\, ‘The Age of Revolutions in Southern Europe’\nRespondents: professor Sujit Sivasundaram (Gonville and Caius College\, Cambridge) and professor Renaud Morieux (Pembroke College\, Cambridge)\nChair: Bianca Gaudenzi (Libera Università di Bolzano; Wolfson College\, Cambridge; Istituto Storico Germanico di Roma) \nPer partecipare su zoom si prega di registrarsi al seguente link: https://wolfson-cam-ac-uk.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJwocuuhqjgsGdQSF_hSP3ilMbk476MsSEpV#/registration \nAbstract: This talk addresses the question of what revolutions were by looking at the way in which they were conceived\, understood and performed by historical actors in the early 19th century. It does so by discussing a wave of uprisings demanding the introduction of constitutions that broke out in Portugal\, Spain\, Piedmont\, Naples and the Ottoman Empire in the 1820s. In particular\, it looks at the military origins of these events\, all organized by army officers\, and the ideals and practices related to them. By so doing\, this talk will point to an alternative chronology and geography of the European age of revolutions that questions existing historical narratives\, based on 1789\, 1830 and 1848\, and centered around France. It shows that the events of the 1820s inaugurated a wave of revolutions in Southern Europe that was independent from its French counterpart and that lasted up to 1870\, thereby highlighting their significance in the history of representative governments and popular politics in Europe.
