SUMMARY:Transloyalties in Citizenship Education (TranCit) final Workshop\, VID Stavanger (Norway\, 11–13 May 2026)
DESCRIPTION:The fourth and final TranCit workshop will take place in Stavanger from May 11th to 13th. The theme of the workshop is “Navigating multiple and shifting loyalties in history and citizenship education – past and present”. We aim to explore how history teaching shapes citizenship in diverse and globalised societies. \nTransloyalities in Citizenship Education (TranCit) is an NFR-funded project that has run over three years (2023-2026) and is now in its final phase. TranCit explores how the teaching of history in secondary school has promoted citizenship\, both historically and today. Over the last year of TranCit\, we host four workshops in South Africa (September 2025)\, Mauritius (January 2026)\, Madagascar (April 2026)\, and Norway (May 2026). More than 80 historians\, educational researchers\, and postgraduates have participated and explored how history teaching shapes citizenship in diverse and globalized societies. \nProgram\nMonday 11 May: 11:30 – 16:00 (Introduction\, keynotes\, presentation with discussion workshops)\n11:30 – 12:00 \nIntroduction by Ellen Vea Rosnes \n(Room: 261K) \nCoffee and tea \n12:00 – 13:00 \nKeynote speech by Professor Johannes Seroto \nTitle of keynote speech: “Transloyalties and Citizenship Education in South Africa” \nIntroduction of keynote by Ellen Vea Rosnes \nLast 15 min: open plenary discussion \n(Room: 261K) \n13:00 – 14:00 \nLunch \n14:00 – 14:45 \n15-minutes presentation by Martha Shaw: Understanding the Interplay; Education\, Lived Worldviews and Citizenship\, followed by 30 minutes discussion \nModerator: Geir Skeie\nChair: Mari Refve Østerhus \n(Room: 257K) \n14:45 – 15:00 \nCoffee and tea break \n15:00 – 15:45 \n15-minute presentation by Marianne Bøe & Kjersti Gjerde Brekklund: Teaching citizenship through controversial issues: Inquiry-based teaching in Norwegian upper secondary school\, followed by 30 minutes discussion \nModerator: Kerenina Dansholm\nChair: Marie-Sophie Caroline Lafleur-Yallappa \n(Room: 257K) \n16:00 \nExcursion\, more information will come \nTuesday 12 May: 09:00 – 16:00 + dinner at 19:00 (Keynote\, presentations with workshop discussions\, workshop dinner)\n09:00-09:30 \nCoffee and welcome \n09:30 – 10:30 \nKeynote speech by Professor Emerita Audrey Osler \nTitle of keynote speech: Education for flexible citizenship in an inflexible and intolerant age \nIntroduction by Øystein Lund Johannessen \nLast 15 min: open plenary discussion \n(Room: 261K) \n10:30 – 10:45 \nBreak \n10:45-11:30 \n15-minutes presentation by Knut Vesterdal: Human Rights Education in the Norwegian Context\, followed by 30 minutes discussion \nModerator: Øystein Lund Johannessen\nChair: Frieder Ludwig \n(Room: 257K) \n11:30-12:30 \nLunch \n12:30-13:15 \n15-minutes presentation by Marta Magdalena Stachurska-Kounta: Critical Race Theory as a lens for inclusion and representation in history education in Norway\, followed by 30 minutes discussion \nModerator: Sheetal Sheena Sookrajowa\nChair: Sanjana Arora \n(Room: 257K) \n13:15-14:00 \n15-minutes presentation by Vidar Fagerheim Kalsås: Provincialising history education in Norway?
